FAQs
Q: Why does 4 CR 1/4 monsters = Deadly for level 1 players?
A: Action economy! Many weak monsters can overwhelm players with attacks. The calculator applies XP multipliers for groups.
Q: How accurate is this for homebrew monsters?
A: Works best for official CR ratings. For homebrew, compare to similar CR monsters first.
Q: Should I always aim for Medium difficulty?
A: No! Vary encounters - Easy for filler, Hard for climax battles, Deadly sparingly.
Terminology
- CR (Challenge Rating): Monster strength (CR 1 = balanced for four level 1 players)
- Adjusted XP: Modified value accounting for monster group size
- Daily Budget: Recommended XP limit per adventuring day
Pro Tips
✔️ Mix monster types (melee + ranged) for dynamic fights
✔️ Use terrain multipliers for environmental challenges
✔️ Deadly encounters work better after resource depletion
Limitations
⚠️ Doesn’t account for magic items/optimized builds
⚠️ Assumes 3-4 encounters per long rest
⚠️ Very large parties (>6) may need manual adjustments
Note: Always tweak based on your party’s unique strengths!
